The Defenders: Review – no spoilers

defenders

Alright, first things first here. FINALLY! IT’S HERE! WOO HOO! BEEN WAITING FOR LIKE EVER! AND NETFLIX AND MARVEL FINALLY HAVE THE DEFENDERS HERE AND I’M SO EXCITED I’M WRITING IN ALL CAPS!!!!!

Ok, now that that’s out of my system. On to actual “unbiased” review.

If you don’t know what the defenders are, that’s ok. I didn’t really know either before Netflix started with DareDevil and The Defenders was announced. DareDevil was the only one of the characters I’d really knew anything about, and no not just because of that Ben Afleck movie that we will never mention again.

If you haven’t watched any of the previous shows, DareDevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, or Iron Fist, and don’t want to take the time to binge all 65 hours or so of those check out this youtube video to get caught up. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Alright, quick version of the review, and then spoilers abound after. You’ve been warned. I liked it. Alright, little more than that. This is the shortest of the Netflix Marvel series at just 8 episodes. It starts off pretty slowly, the first two episodes essentially being “Here’s what everyone’s been up to. Oh, also here’s Sigourney Weaver.” There’s a little bit of setup in these episodes, but none of the Defenders really meet until the third episode. By episode 3 they’ve managed to set up Danny Rand (Iron Fist) and Luke Cage together, and Matt Murdock (DareDevil) and Jessica Jones. But all four have yet to meet. Though should be mentioned Jessica and Luke already know each other.

In this episode, all four do manage to find their way to the same Hand operated building. They get there for different reasons and through different means, but they are all there all the same. They team up, we get our first real fight in the series, obligatory hallway fight (you’ve already seen this in the trailers) and then hey we’re together.

The next few episodes revolve around them figuring out whats going on, why the Hand is doing what they’re doing, blah blah blah, awesome fight scene, end credits, after credits scene for The Punisher (cause its Marvel), fade to black.

Overall though I enjoyed it. I kind of wish it was longer, though I know that’s been a criticism of the other series. Or at the very least that it didn’t take so long to really get moving. I do have a few other thoughts, those will come soon, in the spoiler section.

The one thing I do want to point out after having watched it though, is I’m not really sure why Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and DareDevil were really necessary. I’m pretty sure Luke Cage could have taken care of the entire thing on his own. Particularly with the damage he’s shown he can take, which I’ll address in that spoiler section.

Final final thought. Watch this. Seriously, watch it, right now. Unless you haven’t watched DareDevil and Jessica Jones. If you haven’t, go watch those first. Yeah, there was that youtube video up there, it’s good. But seriously, go watch DareDevil (both seasons) and Jessica Jones.

4/5 for slight slowness and seriously did they need anyone besides Luke Cage?
